PayPal, the immensely profitable payments arm of eBay, is expanding its options for mobile commerce, announcing at its second annual developers conference a feature called Mobile Express Checkout. PayPal claims that its new offering will provide enhanced security and an easy, two-click process — two features the firm sees as critical to advancing its position in an estimated $700 million market.

In addition to the new mobile payment offering, PayPal announced a litany of new partnerships with Web companies including Facebook and merchant services-provider Verifone. ECommerce Guide takes a look.

SAN FRANCISCO — Online payments giant PayPal kicked off its second annual Innovate developer’s conference by unveiling new mobile, social media and digital goods payment options along with a slew of partner announcements from both small and big players including Facebook and Verifone.

Mobile Express Checkout, a new secure two-click checkout feature, extends PayPal’s mobile payments platform.

After more than a year in regulatory purgatory, Comcast wins the blessing of the Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission to take controlling stake in NBC Universal.

January 19, 2011
By Kenneth Corbin, Internet News

The nation’s biggest cable company and Internet service provider is about to get a lot bigger. And that has some public-interest groups crying foul.

More than a year after announcing plans to take a controlling stake in NBC Universal, Comcast has won approval to close the $30 billion deal from the Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission.

Each regulatory authority had been conducting its own investigation, though they worked closely together in reviewing the transaction. The approval comes with significant conditions meant to preserve fair access for rivals and consumers to NBC’s content, but that was only limited solace for the groups that had been working to derail the mega-merger.

The orders of approval include several conditions relating the Internet, including adherence to the FCC’s recent net neutrality rules.
Still, some groups cry are crying foul. Datamation has the story on the approval of the Comcast-NBC merger.

The recent blizzard may have been a pain for thousands of stranded travelers up and down the East Coast, but with millions of Americans homebound in the days following Christmas, online retailers saw sales blossom.

Over the past week, online retailers saw sales spike 17 percent over the same period last year, enough to lift the segment to nearly $31 billion for the holiday season, a record total, according to Web metrics firm comScore. Which segments fared the best? ECommerce Guide takes a look at the latest online holiday shopping totals.

Thanks in part to a major snowstorm that kept many Americans on the East Coast homebound in the days following Christmas, Internet retailers posted another strong week of sales, vaulting this year’s online holiday shopping season to a new record. The steady spending that continued through the holiday week has lifted online sales since the beginning of November to $30.81 billion, a 13 percent increase over the same period last year, according to new figures from online metrics firm comScore.
